About Us – Ashrama

The tribal region of then Bihar now Jharkhand did not escape the ken of Swami Vivekananda's eyes. Swamiji had a vision to establish a technical school and gradually a centre in the tribal area of Chhotanagpur where new ways of food production would be discovered. In this context he mentioned that in central India near Hazaribagh and such other districts of the region of Bihar, a big plot of land would have to be acquired for the purpose.

The vision of Swami Vivekananda took shape with the establishment of this Ashrama at Ranchi in 1927. This Ashrama was founded by Srimat Swami Vishuddhanandaji Maharaj the eights President of Ramakrishna Order. This Ashrama has been sanctified by the visits of Swami Subodhananda, another direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the holy presence of its founder Swami Vishuddhananda. In the year 1969 Divyayan a residential institute for training village youths, particularly tribals, in scientific agriculture, horticulture, dairy, poultry, bee-keeping, farm machinery etc. and social service came in.

Srimat Swami Vishuddhanandaji Maharaj occupies a unique place amongst the illustrious sentinels of the divine flame that was kindled in the form of Ramakrishna Movement over hundred years ago. It is rare privilege indeed for Ranchi Ashrama, that it was started by this  illustrious disciple of the Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi. Since its humble beginning in 1927 Swami Vishuddhanandaji blessed this Ashram by his bengin presence and intense sadhana for over twenty five year till he left for Belur Math as Vice-President in 1952. Ranchi Ashrama was so dear to him that even after he became Vice-President, he would spend here about two months every year giving joy of his spiritual presence and guidance to the devotees. He became President of the Ramakrishna Order in 1962. Being a direct disciple of the Holy Mother, he was love and devotion personified for the devotees; source of divine influence for the youthful workers and glowing example of self surrender for monks. He is still alive in the hearts of many devotees at Ranchi as also throughout the country
