Title of on-farm trials : Prevention of spoilage of fresh fruits and vegetables
Problem diagnose: Spoilage of vegetables and fruits during storage.
Details of technologies selected for assessment/refinement Fresh Fruits and vegetables when stored in bamboo iceless refrigerator their shelf lives increase up to some extent. This is a low cost device for storing food and can be made easily by rural women out of commonly available materials. Cool Storage can prolong the life of fresh produce, but refrigeration equipment is expensive to buy, run and to maintain. There is, however, a practical low cost alternative for on farm fruit and vegetable storage while employs the cooling power of evaporation. Zero energy cool chambers stay 10-150C cooler than the outside temperature and maintain about 90% relative humidity and they are easy to build out a locally available materials, such as brick, sand, bamboo straw and gunny bags. Final Recommendation for micro level situation As the results of summer and rainy seasons are yet to come so final recommendation can not be provided now.
Constraints identified and feed back for research : :Zero energy cool chamber requires space in farmers households so many farmers refused to construct it as they have little space in their houses. :Some farmers felt inconvenience in watering daily of their cool chambers
Feed Back From the Farmers :Farmer showed interest in storing vegetables in zero energy cool chamber :Farmers don’t find convenience is using Bamboo iceless refrigerator for storing vegetables |
